Chapter Nine
June wanted so badly to run her hands along Augustusâs body. His shirt of white lawn enhanced the size of his muscles and made his shoulders appear quite broad. He was lean and sinewed, nothing soft about him, not even his expression as he looked at her.
A shiver of delight ran through her.
Did he want to touch her?
She cleared her throat which was now impossibly dry. âWeâve discussed sight. Next is the sense of touch. Umâ¦this is the point where you touch me and see how I respond.â
Why did he suddenly look so pained?
But he edged closer, apparently willing to continue. âIs there anywhere, in particular, you would like me to touch you?â
Oh, please. Everywhere.
She stared down at the book because she was going to make a fool of herself if she continued to look at him. âNowhere impolite, of course. Not that such thoughts crossed your mind. You are a gentleman.â
He laughed.
âAre you not?â
âNo, June. I am not. I would caution you to keep that in mind.â
Sweet mother.
Is this why her body felt deliciously on fire?
She held out her hand. âLetâs start with something simple like the touch of our hands.â
Of course, she would love to do more. His muscled arms and those gloriously big shoulders of his were definitely beckoning to her.
âAll right, but never mistake this touch for something simple. It is not. It is a deceptively potent sensation.â
âThank you for the warning. I shall keep it in mind while we explore this sense.â Her hand was still held out to him, but he had not moved to take it yet.
Breathe, June.
She glanced up and found herself staring into his fiery gaze. Well, she thought it was fiery. Perhaps it was just the sun beating down on him, although they were in the shade.
She could do with a lemonade.
Or a bucket of cold water thrown over her head.
His gaze was still hot enough to melt her insides.
âWhy are you frowning, June?â
Because she could not explain any of what she was feeling. He should not be looking at her in that Iâm-going-to-set-your-body-on-fire way. Hah! She was already in flames.
Besides, they had already discussed the sense of sight and were moving on to the next sensation, which was touch.
Her hand was still out.
Why had he not taken it yet? âI find this chapter quite difficult to understand.â
He regarded her earnestly, no trace of mockery or condescension. âWhy?â
She should not have suggested they continue reading this book. She should not have brought them back to the beginning chapters on the senses.
She took a deep breath as he now took her hand in his, and tingles shot up her spine. âWhenever you touch me, I respond from somewhere deep within my soul. This feeling does not spring from any logical place. I cannot control it, Augustus. It is just there. How can anyone understand a feeling such as this? How can anyone tame it or put logic to it?â
âOne cannot. As I said, it is a powerful sensation.â
She nodded, trying to ignore the soft swirl of his thumb over the top of her hand.
